Haasana (Hassan)
An Attractive Abode of Art – Sculpture and Plethora Nature

The Hassan City more fully and meaningfully known as the Simhaasana Nagari originally, before the mutation of names made by foreign rulers is the administrative centre of the Hassan district which is the invaluable crown of the Karnataka state, whose glory is sung as being the dear offspring of the great Mother Bharata Maataa. This district is rich with natural sceneries and too with cultural wealth. It stands at a height of nearly 2000 ft above the sea level comprehending about
6850 sq Km. Vastness of fertile land, extending north latitude 120 13' to 130 38' and longitude 750 33'  to 760  38'.

It happens to be the confluence of three verities of areas namely the mountainous, the semi mountainous and the open field areas (Malenadu, Are Malenadu, Bayalu Seeme)
It yields from its dry fields, wet fields and garden_ bosoms, variegated crops such as Areca, coconut, coffee, cardamum, sugarcane, banana, pepper, rubber and other commercial crops along with Paddy, Ragi, Jowar, Potato and other food crops. This is a sacred abode of the pure sandal trees too.

The Haemavati, the Yagachi a part of the Cauvery form the life blood running through the veins of this area. Dams have been constructed across the Haemavati and the Yagachi near Gorur and Belur.

The Nandas, the Mouryas, the Kadambas, the Calukyas, the Hoysalas, the Lords of Vijaya Nagar Empire, the Kings of Belur, and the Monarchs of Mysore - thus several dynasties had their dominions over this land. Belur and Halebeedu have revelled in History as the Capitals of the Hoysala Reign.

The very first written document of the Kannada Language has been exposed to the world by this district, in the form of Halmidi Saasana (Halmidi Inscription)

Janna, Nagachandra, Tanti, Kesiraja, Mallikarjuna, Rudrabhatta,Boppanna, Sumandoana and such great poets, grammarians, critics and cogitators have ploughed deep the areas of language literature and life here. Even today literary giants like Goruru Ramaswamy Iyangar and others, and classical musical stalwarts like Veene Doreswamy Iyangar, and R.K.Sreekantan and then many an actor like Puttanna Kanagal and many Gamaka scholar like Koushik and Priyadrini Iyangar, and famous sportsmen like Javagal Sreenath, and then dance experts and connoisseurs in many other fields have been springing one after another like genuine gems and corals as though germinating from the woombs of this ever fertile Hassan ground day to day.

Thus there is an agreable embodiment of diverse varieties in this vista of Hassan district. Viz verities of culture, varieties of scenic nature, varieties of village life, agricultural and sericultural activities in different forms, Linguistic varieties, numerable political rules, through the times of History, varieties of inscriptions giving proofs of accomplishments of the rulers, and amiable co-existence of many different ways of worship, rituals and other religious practices. Thus this Haasan district is in itself a where innumerable varieties co-exist in a cozy and congenial way of general life exemplary in its ecological and emotional balance.

Even like the pelf of natural wealth and of literature and culture, or even excelling all that, the art of sculpture that has come to light here is the thing, that has earned a place of prominence in the map of the world for Haasana district, as well as for the state of Karnataka itself. It was the Gangas and the Hoysalas who have contributed the immense treasure of sculptural art work to us to be handed over from generation to generation with proper care and protective measures. Empires and Kingdoms have come and gone, but the sovereign state of the Art of Sculpture erected by them has remained immortal unto this day.

Let us have now a view of a few visitors' paradises available in this celebrity of a district, which proudly belongs to the State of Karnataka.
