Doddagaddavalli
Doddagaddavalli
Was considerably famous during the Hoysala age. The big business magnate of the Hoysala kingdom, going by the name Kulhana Rahuta, was residing here. He and his wife Sahaja Devi built a congregation of Lakshmi Temples in this town in 1114 AD. Though this temple complex is named after Mahalakshmi there are four sanctuaries in it containing respectively the idols of Sree Mahalakshmi, Sree Mahavishnu, Mahakali and Bhootanatha (Linga). From the point of
chronology this has been declared as the firstever built temple of the Hoysala Style.

This is the only instance of sheltering sree Mahalakshmi in the Hoysala style of architecture. As such this town was also nick named Abhinava Kolhapura.

There is a confluence of the saakta , the Vaishnava and Shaiva ways of worship here. And this is another specialty of the place.

This is also the only example of a 'catushkoota', a Quadruplet of sanctuaries of the Hoysala style.

One more special aspect is the six feet huge image of the Betala included among. The retinue deities (parivara Devataas) very unusually here.

One navaranga stands common for all the four sanctuaries. A few broken idols are also found in the navaranga. There are sculptures on the outer surface. But there are shikaraas of the Dravidian style for all the four sanctuaries. Apart and aloof is a Bhairava temple too. A strong praakaara (high compound) envelops the temple and harbours four little sanctuaries in its interior corners. Thus there are 9 shikharaas in all in this temple. On each of the main shikhaars the Hoysala symbol exists. A broad porticohall is in front of the praakaara. The sculptor of this temple bore the name Malloja Maaniyoja.
